Arctic Blast

imagined by: James Mathias

When we decided to move to Idaho we knew it would snow. We were prepared to have to contend with cold weather and less than pleasant driving conditions. These were things we felt we could handle. Cold is curable, put on a jacket, turn up the heater. Unsafe driving conditions are preventable, drive slower, pay better attention and be prepared.

Our first winter here—last year—was not so bad, it snowed real heavy around Thanksgiving, but then it let up and didn’t really come down as hard again, leaving the roads slightly unsafe but drivable and the cold wasn’t completely unbearable. My Mom said “This is a pretty heavy winter for up here. Usually it snows less” Oh, good. I thought, we can handle these “mild” winters, no problemo!

Cut to October 28th of this year, the first snow fall! YAY! exactly 30 days early! YAY! It was heavy too. Then it began to melt away and the roads weren’t so bad and the cold wasn’t to harsh, this might be OK.

Wrong!

It continued to snow, and it is still snowing. The ground is littered with sparkling white crystals of death.

The boys love it, then again they haven’t any responsibilities nor must the shoulder the burden of the whole family’s lives during long drives to the nearest grocery store.

The news is calling it an “Arctic Blast!” the “Worst one in years.” The UPS driver is afraid it won’t stop snowing anytime soon. He says; “Worst winter in 10 years” YAY!

Needless to say I’m not happy, Amy’s not happy. We have a baby due in 35 days, and at least 6 more trips to the baby doctor which is 45 minutes away. We need groceries, I’ve been working out at home to limit the amount of “on the road” time to reduce the chances of a winter ice wreck.

All in all it’s going to be great!

I hate snow. I used to like it, but now it taunts me.

Here’s some pics from around the house enjoy!

Our Deck and back yard. where does the deck end and the yard begin?

The wind chimes in the back yard. The sweet sound of my insides freezing.

Our front yard and driveway, they are normally quite clearly separated, apparently the snow is trying to trick me. Bastard Snow!

You know the score, keep it clean and on topic. “Spammers” & “trolls” are decimated on sight.

LOL!!! Frackin’ arctic blast! I’m just hoping that we have to be induced to get this baby out rather than suddenly go into labor in the middle of the night and have to drive thru snow and darkness! sad
Good pics too hunny. smile

David Sissitka

I don’t see any snowmen or igloos, you’ve got work to do. :P Man, it’s hard to believe that the baby is due in 35 days. It seems like it was just yesterday that you announced it. How many inches of snow is on the ground?

James Mathias

Yeah this baby gestation period has flown by.

There are exactly “too” many inches on the ground.

Bonita in Pink

wow. How awesome is that? I would give anything to have snow right now. Artist blast and all… lol

=)

Stay Warm!

James Mathias

It’ not awesome at all. Please take all our snow. You can have it.

Sarah Allison

Pretty snow…send some here! smile You know, if Amy goes into labor early, she can always give birth on the couch…just put towels down… smile

James Mathias

no! the snow is not pretty. It’s a deadly and satanic. DIE DEMON SNOW!!

mom

ok…mean ole crazy mom needs to respond. Snow is not fun. I agree. Last winter was not typical. This winter is way more not typical. I have to drive each and every “frickin” day back and forth to where the baby will be born in this. BUT I have to say that those road guys are very excellant at their jobs and so far roads have been clear even tho we now possess two feet of snow. I wish I could make it better for you James….but God just won’t listen to me on this one. Please remember that I have 4 wheel drive and if you need me for baby delivering I will be there no matter the time…day or night!!!

Roger

Hee hee. Don’t want to sound unsympathetic… but yeah… hee hee.

Lol.

Don’t worry about the baby. Well, I know you will anyway, but you should try not to. It’ll be fine. Karen remembers her mother telling her stories of the ladies in the prairies who’d put up flags when they were in labor so that nearby women could come over and help, because they couldn’t get out to town due to the snow.

It all works out bro. Women have been giving birth for many many years in worse conditions. That isn’t trying to make light of this… just to try to aleviate some stress.

Course if you want sympathy from me cause you got some snow… lmao.

Dallas experience its own ’Arctic Blast’ which means we saw *some sleet*. But it meant that the temperature did drop 50 degrees (F) overnight, from 80 to below freezing.

Colin D. Devroe

I’m looking forward to the snow. Then I’m looking forward to it going away.

Mike Stickel

I’m not looking forward to the snow at all either James. I’m in the mountains of PA for the first time and I don’t really know what to expect but I sure would rather be much further south that’s for sure.

Good luck with the driving and good luck in the next 35 days. I’m looking forward to hearing the news.

Maggi

I know you are pissed about all this, but this blog is fracking hilarious. I love “bastard snow….”
Now mom’s evil plan to practice being a OB is becoming realised…..

Amy Mathias

I would actually rather have Mik or James deliver this kid, the doctors here are man hating robot douche bags!

James Mathias

That has got to be hands down the funniest thing I’ve read all year!

rich

the snow looks beautiful. i love it. i believe that you will be safe driving. i believe your baby will be delivered safely and in no way will the weather hurt you…

Amy Mathias
