Light vs Dark, Psycho-therapy, Drug Addiction, Moral and Ethic Ambiguity and The Every-man
imagined by: James Mathias
For this week’s NetFlix One Line Reviews I watched Nochony Dozor (Night Watch), Running With Scissors, Half Nelson, Blood Diamond and Rocky Balboa. I watched five instead of three, and I’ll be breaking another rule of these posts as I have a bit more to say about two of the films, than a single line.

Nochony Dozor (Night Watch); “Although this film was Russian, I watched the English dub and it was quite good, a tad confusing at times, but I assume it was the cultural differences between countries, overall a very good fantasy-action flick.”
Running With Scissors; “Great performances, odd tale, handlebar mustaches and Annette Bening.”
Half Nelson; “This was very hard to watch, Gosling puts in work as a drug addicted, borderline pedo, history teacher, not what I expected and not that entertaining, but the acting was superb.”
Here’s where I have more to say.
Blood Diamond; "What the hell is the deal here? Why is this kind of stuff happening? Over money? FUCKING money!!
This film was hard to watch, just like Half Nelson, but in a different way. I could barely contain my rage and hold my stomach and mend my heart as it was torn in every direction while I witnessed the atrocities that are being fictionlized here—yet something tells me it’s not going to be too far from the truth in this case.
Over diamonds? Humans are torturing, raping, enslaving, murdering, dismembering and lying and cheating and scheming for diamonds. For diamonds?
I know this isn’t new news, I know it’s been happening for a long time, and I’m sad that it took a DiCaprio film to put it in our faces.
I’m sickened, and I will never wear, buy or accept a diamond, ever.
Lastly, if you’ve seen this film and you continue to support the diamond trade afterwards, shame on you."
Rocky Balboa; "This was the best Rocky ever. Stallone is an under-appreciated genius. His films always make money and they are always entertaining. But, most folks write him off as a dumb meat-head, which if you’ve ever seen him speak out of character, you’d be shocked at his actual level of intelligence.
I loved this film from beginning to end, it had everything that makes a great movie, and everything that makes a great Rocky, plus it went the extra mile and gave us back something that had long been missing from modern cinema. An everyman, a real, honest-to-goodness every Joe.
Thank you Sly, you’ve built a legacy of great movies and work that will stay with us for a long time to come, and I’m proud to say that I’ve enjoyed your work for a lifetime."

Blood Diamond was an excellent movie. One of my all time favourites.
The movie does tell a horrible tale of what is happening in some parts of the world, but it can only do good by being exposed.
As a South African I can tell you Leo puts on a brilliant accent, proving his exceptional acting skills.
Oh and I don’t think you need to go as far as saying you’ll never buy, or accept a diamond again. Just make sure its “conflict-free”.
Great blog.

I agree wholeheartedly with you on the Blood Diamond review. It really sickened me, but i thought the movie was done excellently and DiCaprio was brilliant.

The film was excellent and as always so was Leo.
But, it still made a point with me that I found more important than the film and performances.
As for just buying conflict-free diamonds, how in the world would anyone really know where a diamond came from unless they dug it up themselves? I’ll just stick to the no diamond policy, not that I have a huge need for any diamonds at all.
@Mark thanks for the compliment on my blog, I appreciate it.

I was just at Walmart last night looking at movies to pick up. I’ve been wanting to see 16 blocks for a long time now (lurvs me some Willis) so I got that but I was torn about Blood Diamond and Rocky.
To set this up a little bit, I’m typically the guy that grabs the super-duper special limited extended overpriced edition. I looked through the selection several times and kept zeroing in on the Blood Diamond/Syriana 2 for 1 deal and the Rocky Balboa/(some other film but I forget the title) 2 for 1 deal. It was a bit of an internal struggle but I went with the first deal. Haven’t watched it yet but based on this review tonight is going to be a good night. It also looks like I’ll have to either suck it up and get Rocky now or wait until the super complete uber box set comes out next christmas. :P

Both are definitely worth the purchase.
I like to get the special editions too, and I do when they are available, however a majority of the films I want don’t get the super edition treatment, so I count myself lucky to just find them in widescreen format.
